Can a subcontractor get a mortgage?

Yes, subcontractors can get a mortgage, including those working under the CIS scheme. The lender will usually assess income using CIS payslips, tax calculations, bank statements and sometimes average earnings over a period. The approach depends on whether you are treated as employed, self-employed or paid through a contractor arrangement. Many subcontractors assume they will struggle, but there are lenders that actively work with CIS applicants. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. You may have to pay an early repayment charge to your existing lender if you remortgage.
